太平洋戦争末期に多くの若者が特攻隊員として飛び立った基地が置かれた、鹿児島県の南九州市知覧町と鹿屋市にある資料館に、この１年余りの間に特攻隊員の遺品を寄贈した遺族の半数は、「おい」や「めい」が占めていることがわかり、多くが若くして死亡し、子どもがいない特攻隊員の記憶を、おいやめいが受け継いでいる実態がうかがえます。
