群馬県渋川市の金井下新田遺跡で、６世紀はじめに起きた榛名山の噴火の火砕流で埋もれた場所から、馬２頭の輪郭と骨の一部が見つかりました。県の調査事業団によりますと、馬の輪郭がわかる状態で出土したのは珍しく、当時、この地域に、どのような馬がいたのかなどをうかがうことができる、貴重な発見だとしています。
