In the South China Sea, while China is reclaiming land on reefs and other features it physically controls, a recent analysis by an American research institution revealed that Vietnam is also carrying out land reclamation and port infrastructure development on 20 features for which it asserts sovereignty. In particular, the analysis noted that land reclamation has accelerated rapidly since the latter half of 2022, leading experts to suggest that "Vietnam is seeking to assert its presence as China's activities expand."
