三井住友フィナンシャルグループの太田純前社長が11月25日、すい臓がんで亡くなった。65歳だった。学生時代にバスケットボールやアメリカンフットボールで鍛えた180センチを超える大柄な体格に少しかすれた、太い声。迫力ある風貌とは裏腹に、冗談を交えながら、いつの間にかこちらが質問しやすい空気をつくってくれる人だった。銀行の未来像を生き生きと語る一方、貧困の連鎖や格差がはびこる現代の日本社会を憂う。そんな姿が今も印象に残っている。（経済部 西園興起）
